Creating a recode variable

Recode variables use a lookup table to transform the values of a category column or indicator variable. To create a new recode variable:

  1. In the Summary view, select the category column (or indicator variable) that you wish to recode
  2. Choose Column > Recode Variable…
  3. Fill out the table and press OK

The “Smart Recode” feature will fill in any missing values for you with a sequence of integers, starting either at 1 or at the last non-missing value.

The new column can be given any name or title of your choosing.
